Why do I need coach supervision?

As part of our continued professional development, it is recommended that all coaches engage in regular coach supervision.

EMCC Global’s definition of supervision is

A safe space for reflective dialogue with a practicing supervisor, supporting the supervisee’s practice, development and well-being.

EMCC Global believes that experienced practitioners require a minimum of four hours individual supervision per year, evenly distributed across twelve months. EMCC Global also believes that the minimum ratio of practice to supervision, for an experienced practitioner should be 35 practice hours to 1 hour of supervision received.

Here we explain the value of supervision, and share details of our newly launched MAGIC supervision services.

The Association for Coaching explains

"Coaching supervision is a formal and protected time for facilitating a coach’s in-depth reflection on their practice with a Coaching Supervisor. Supervision offers a confidential framework within a collaborative working relationship in which the practice, tasks, process and challenges of the coaching work can be explored. The primary aim of supervision is to enable the coach to gain in ethical competency, confidence and creativity so as to ensure best possible service to the coaching client, both coachees and coaching sponsors. Supervision is not a ‘policing’ role, but rather a trusting and collegial professional relationship. "

If you are a professional coach seeking to work with a qualified supervisor, we can create a partnership that supports you to:

  • Explore client ‘cases’ in a confidential space, to enable new insights that will add value for the client and their key stakeholders

  • Develop your knowledge, skills and abilities as a coach, through reflections on your coaching practice

  • Revisit and refresh your understanding of the professional standards and ethical behaviours that shape the coaching environment

  • Consider the next steps you will take to develop and enhance your unique coaching style.

Our Supervision sessions take place in a confidential, supportive environment, and are led by an experienced, qualified supervisor.

We offer:

  1.  90 minute virtual group sessions, with a maximum of 8 people: £40+VAT
  2. 60 minute virtual individual sessions: £100 +VAT
  3. 90 minute virtual individual sessions: £150 +VAT

What topics could I bring to coach supervision?

  • The International Centre for Coaching Supervision (ICCS) describes the three functions of Coaching Supervision as ‘Formative, Normative and Restorative.’

Here are some examples of themes or questions that coaches bring to supervision sessions:

FORMATIVE THEMES/QUESTIONS:

These focus on the development of the coach as a person.

This may relate to increasing knowledge, skills and practice, but also to the emergence of a coach’s personal coaching style and identity- how they ‘show up’ in their coaching practice.

Formative Questions that coaches might bring include:

  • How do I deal with a client who is unreliable/non- responsive?
  • I feel stuck with a client, how can I fix this?

NORMATIVE THEMES/QUESTIONS:

These cover the issue of standards and ethics in coaching, what is perceived to be OK or NOT OK within the boundaries of a coaching relationship and across the profession as a whole.

The themes relate to the coach as an ‘ethical practitioner.’

Normative Questions that Coaches might bring to supervision include:

  • My new client is unhappy with an element of my coaching contract – how should I deal with their objection?
  • There is a conflict of interest between my client’s goals for their coaching and the organisation’s objectives – how do I resolve this?

RESTORATIVE THEMES/QUESTIONS

This function is concerned with supporting the coach to recover from the ongoing emotional impact of supporting clients with sometimes challenging and sensitive issues.

Supervision can support a coach like a cleanser, to wash away leftover emotions from their work, regain their balance and emerge refreshed.

Restorative Themes/Questions might include:

  • I dread working with this client – I always feel drained after a session with them
  • My client’s difficult situation reminds me of similar challenges I have experienced in my life, which is affecting my ability to support them

For many of the themes above, there may not be one simple outcome.

Differing contexts, objectives, contracts and stakeholders will mean that each unique ‘case’ presented by a supervisee and explored with a supervision group could lead to diverse reflections and conclusions, with multiple possible choices explored.

Ultimately, the Supervisee is in control - they have the privilege and the power to choose which, if any, of the possible options they will take forward.
